Post Marathon Recovery
Accelerate your recovery after running a Full Marathon by –
Icing your legs and stretching promptly following completion of a full Marathon and daily for a week following the race
Jogging 15 – 30 minutes the day following your Full Marathon and every other day for the week following the marathon
Beginning a 3 – 6 week “Active Rest” period following completion of your Full Marathon –
- Disengage from intense and rigidly disciplined training during your period of “Active Rest”
- Exercise only as you feel the need for activity during your period of “Active Rest”
- Running is an acceptable activity during your period of “Active Rest”
- Experiment with exercise activities other than running during your period of “Active Rest”
- Choose exercise activities that are fun during your period of “Active Rest”
- Reduce your daily caloric intake as your training volume and intensity diminishes during your period of “Active Rest”
- Return to intense, rigidly disciplined training only after feeling refreshed as a result of your period of “Active Rest”
Nutrition during "Active Rest"
To avoid weight gain after to your goal event:
- Continue to maintain a balanced diet while reducing caloric intake as your training volume decreases
- Include generous amounts of fluids and electrolytes in your diet
