Health & Nutrition Tip an archived pearl of nutritional wisdom from David W. Grotto, RD, LD, CLL

Hey, running is a great way to manage your weight!  Of course the other part of the equation is managing the number of calories we consume each day.  So, diet sodas fit well in the over all strategy, right?  Maybe not!

Researchers from Purdue University have recently discovered that the benefits of consuming diet sodas leave many consumers ‘flat’.  Professor Terry Davidson and associate professor Susan Swither’s study, “A Pavlovian Approach to the Problem of Obesity”, found that artificial sweeteners used in diet sodas may be sending the wrong message to the body and still cause one to over-consume calories.

Bottom line – save your calories for food.  Try a seltzer and fruit juice combo for a more nutritious drink.

Dress and train wisely when temperatures fall a coaching tip from Coach Bill Leach

  • Train at the warmest times of the day when possible
  • Layer appropriately – accept feeling chilled for the first 5 – 10 minutes to avoid being over-dressed for the remainder of your runs
  • Run with a tail-wind rather than against a head-wind when possible
  • Avoid treacherous footing when possible
  • Run carefully when running on ice covered surfaces or around active animals
