Staying on Course When the Flu is Flying  by Dave Grotto, RD, LD

Many of you may have concerns about not having access to the flu vaccine. As you may have heard, the flu vaccine has already been allocated to those at most risk; the elderly, pregnant women, immune compromised individuals, health care workers, etc. The good news is that by being a runner and taking reasonably good care of yourself, this can well position you to battle influenza.

But are there natural ways of fighting the ‘bug’? Try a few of these out for size:

Lifestyle:

  • Wash hands often
  • Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing. If you are sick, STAY HOME!!
  • Regular physical activity, getting proper rest and avoiding stress

Food:

  • Chicken soup (heck…it’s worth a try!)
  • Lots of fresh fruit and veggies
  • Green Tea
  • Garlic - (antibacterial\immune builder)
  • Red wine - (New study shows antibacterial properties. Yeah!)
  • Wasabi - (antibacterial)
  • Non-denatured whey protein

Supplements: (most can be found at your local health food or drug store)

  • A Homeopathic formula called ‘Oscillococcinum’ by Boiron
  • Airborne effervescent tablets (invented by a school teacher to help combat airborne illness)
  • Elderberry extract
  • Olive leaf and Oil of Oregano extract

 Good luck and stay healthy!
