The Modern Olympic Games -

Pierre 'de Coubertin, a history teacher from France, with a passion for sport and Greek history, founded the International Olympic Committee in 1894,  The first Olympic Games of the Modern Olympic Games was in Athens, Greece in 1896.  Under 'de Coubertin's leadeship, the Olympic movement was deeply committed to amateurism, fairness/ethics and participation as the guiding principles of the International Olympic movement.

Although many of the values promoted during 'de Coubertin's reign of leadership have been replaced by values related to winning, profressionalism and politics, a subcurrent of the founding values continues to be promoted under the title of "Olympism".

Olympism is a philosophy of life established within the Fundamental Principles of Olympism of the Olympic Charter http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Charter>.

As stated in the Principles of Olympism of the Olympic Charter, "Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles."

As stated on the website of the International Olympic Academy, "The
International Olympic Academy
functions as a multicultural interdisciplinary centre that aims at studying, enriching and promoting Olympism." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Olympic_Academy
